Wolfgang Gieren's research focusses on the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale with stellar distance indicators, particularly with Cepheid variables, red clump stars and blue supergiants. He is the principal investigator of the Araucaria Project in which these objects and the tools used to measure their distances are studied and compared in a number of galaxies in the Local and Sculptor Groups. Gieren is also involved in the search and study of planetary companions to solar-type stars which show photometric transits, and in the spectroscopic followup of halo giants which will be
