Wolfgang Gieren's research focusses on the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale with stellar distance indicators, particularly with Cepheid variables, red clump stars and blue supergiants. He is the principal investigator of the Araucaria Project in which these objects and the tools used to measure their distances are studied and compared in a number of galaxies in the Local and Sculptor Groups. Gieren is also involved in the search and study of planetary companions to solar-type stars which show photometric transits, and in the spectroscopic followup of halo giants which will be used for the astrometric grid of the

 

 
   
 
SIM space mission. He is regularly using large telescopes in Chile and elsewhere for optical and
near-infrared imaging, and for low- and high-resolution spectroscopy. He has also been using the Hubble Space Telescope for his research. Wolfgang Gieren obtained his Ph.D. in 1975 at the University of Bonn in Germany and joined the U. de Concepción in 1996 as a Full Professor.
