School students learn the secrets of the Universe

Un Some 60 students attended the First Workshop of the “Introduction to Astronomy: Our eyes to the secrets of the Universe".

It all began with greetings from the director of the Astronomy Department UdeC, Dr. Wolfgang Gieren, who was appreciative of the presence of so many young people on a Friday afternoon and also motivated them to explore this exciting career.

Next there was a public outreach talk titled "Introduction to Astronomy" by Dr. Christian Moni-Bidin. Then it was the turn of an engineer, specialized in Radio-Astronomy, Dr. Ricardo Bustos, who surprised the audience with a lecture on "Radio-Astronomy and Cosmic Background Radiation". Following his talk, he connected “live” with a degree student - Gustavo Orellana – observing at a telescope in the north.

Finally, we conducted the workshop "Measuring the distance to the supernova 1987A", presented by Dr. Ronald Mennickent. This workshop was supported by the advanced students: Gustavo Aguayo y César Muñoz.

In the hall of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences a photo exhibition was held, from the astronomical FETTU (From Earth to the Universe), of the Centre for Astrophysics and Related Technologies, CATA.
