Recently Dr. Massimo Tarenghi has visited UdeC to offer a
public outreach session to the local community and university

On Monday 15 and Tuesday June 16, the representative of ESO in Chile, Dr. Massimo Tarenghi, made an official visit to our university, invited by the Department of Astronomy.

After his arrival to Concepción, on the Monday evening there were various meetings with researchers at the Department of Astronomy UdeC.

On Tuesday 16, at 10:30, he attended a meeting with the Dean of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Rodolfo Araya. Later, with the Dean and director of the Department of Astronomy, Dr. Wolfgang Gieren, he made a protocol visit to the Rector of the University of Concepcion, Sergio Lavanchy.

After the protocol visit, a press conference was held in the meetings hall of the UdeC Rectory. At the event, many journalists attended –including “El Sur”, “El Mercurio”, “El Diario de Concepción”, “Panorama”, “Radio UdeC”, “Radio Bío Bío”, “Canal TVU”, “Canal 9 Regional” and Corecyt Bío Bío. Interviews were held with Dr. Tarenghi about the costs, benefits, and full potential of upcoming projects in Chile for new generations of astronomers, including projects as influential as ALMA and the E-ELT.

At 3:00 pm, Dr. Tarenghi provided the seminar "ESO’s Telescopes: from 1.5 to 42 meters" in the auditorium UdeC, located in the Humanities and Arts Faculty. About 200 people arrived that afternoon, to listen to Dr. Tarenghi. The public was composed of UdeC authorities, members of the Department of Astronomy, academics, students, schoolchildren and specially invited teachers.

The event was also attended by the academic Vice-Rector, Ernesto Figueroa; and the director of UdeC outreach, María Nieves Alonso.

During the afternoon's talk, Dr. Tarenghi made time to answer all the questions of the events attendants.
