2nd Announcement
The observational evidence for a connection between Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) and galaxy evolution appears now to be well established. Hence, it is clear that understanding galaxy evolution requires to account for the central supermassive black hole, its formation and its subsequent evolution. Significant progress have been made recently in obtaining a better census of AGN activity and in studying the connection between black hole growth and galaxy evolution. However, critical questions still remain unanswered: How and when are the first black holes seeds formed? What triggers AGN activity? Is the triggering mechanism a function of AGN luminosity and/or redshift? How complete is our AGN census? What kind of sources are we potentially missing? What is the observational evidence for AGN feedback? In what type of galaxies do we expect to detect it? The combination of recent observations that are starting to come out from new facilities such as Herschel, NuSTAR, ALMA and others, as well as state of the art computational simulations, has allowed significant progress toward answering such questions. Therefore, we believe that it is very timely to have a conference to review these results and have a better feeling of where the future of the field in the next few years.
Chile is now a key player in AGN and galaxy evolution studies, not only because most of the world's great observatories are installed here, but also because there is now a significant number of groups and reserachers working in this topic. The scenic Patagonia region, will provide the perfect background to host a lively and enganging discussion of the latest observational and theorical results in the field
The meeting will be held in the beautiful resort town on Puerto Varas, which is only 1.5 hours away from Santiago flying south. Puerto Varas is in the Chilean patagonia and very close to many great outdoors activities, such as fishing, hiking, rafting, mountain climbing, etc. It is also very close to Puerto Montt, from where a variety of cruises to the southern Chilean fjords depart, and the scenic Chiloe island. Early March is a very good time to be there, since it is off-peak season (December-February), while the weather should still be good and pleasant.
More information about the meeting can be found at: http://www.astro-udec.cl/agn15.
Please note that as the Chilean pesos to US dollars conversion has changed significantly over the last few months, the registration fee (which is paid in cash directly at the meeting) will very likely be reduced.
Conference dates: March 9-13, 2015
Registration deadline: December 15, 2014
