MORE ABOUT ME:
I am a full professor of astronomy at the University
of Concepción, Chile. My
research interests are the
evolution of galaxies and clusters of
galaxies. Previously, I was postdoctoral researcher at
the Department of Physics
& Astronomy of the University
of California
Riverside, and at
the Department of Physics &
Astronomy of the Johns Hopkins
University in Baltimore, USA.
I obtained my Ph.D. in astrophysics from
the Université
Denis Diderot (Paris VII), France, in December
2003. My
thesis work was carried out at the European
Southern
Observatory in Garching bei Muenchen, Germany, and
also at the Institut
d'Astrophysique de
Paris in France. The research was about the physical
properties and evolution of baryons in nearby and distant
clusters of galaxies.
I was born in Santiago, Chile, and studied physics and astronomy
as an undergraduate at the Pontificia Universidad Católica
de Chile (PUC). In January 1999, I obtained my B.S. degree in
Physics from PUC, after completion of a research work in
astrophysics at its Department of Astronomy and
Astrophysics. In the same year, I entered
the Graduate
School of Astronomy and Astrophysics in Paris which I
obtained the DEA Diploma in Astrophysics from in June 2000.
I am a member of the International
Astronomical Union (my IAU
profile here),
the Chilean
Astronomical Society, the Chilean Space Association, and
the Asociación
Chilena de Astronomía y
Astronáutica where I started as
an amateur astronomer. When I am not
working in the office or at the telescope,
I love spending my time
doing photography,
climbing
mountains, running,
flying
or sleeping, among few other things.

abyss". This is the view toward the Elqui river valley from near
the 0.9-meter telescope at The Cerro Tololo Inter-american
Observatory.

In addition to learning to fly airplanes, a couple of times I have
jumped out of a perfectly flying aircraft. A truly amazing
experience! These are images of my second skydive, with the people
of the Ocean
City Skydiving Center in Maryland, USA.
