MY (PHOTOGRAPHIC) NEWS SECTION:
Welcome to my news photo-blog! Below there is a selection of
images, related to my trips, work and other activities that I have
carried out or participated in, either in Chile or abroad. All
photographs have been taken by myself (© R. Demarco, 2014-2022), unless
explicitly stated otherwise.
November 14th, 2014: The GOGREEN Survey (PI Michael
Balogh) begins its spectroscopic campaign at the Gemini
South Observatory in Chile. Observers on site include
Julie Nantais, Allison Noble and Ricardo Demarco. First
night with an average seeing of ~0.4 arcsec and as good
as
0.35 arcsec in the optical!
September 26th-28th, 2014: the winners of the 2nd
Astronomy Conference for School Kids of the Bío
Bío Region in Chile visit the Las Campanas and
Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatories. The
iniciative
is funded by the EMBIGGEN project as an
effort to bring astronomy to the newer generations of
future scientists for Chile. The photograph below shows
the participants posing in front of the Magellan Baade
Telescope, under the center of the Milky Way.
July 5th-25th, 2014: My science Euro Tour 2014 took me to
Austria, Italy, Portugal, and France. I participated in the IAU
Symposium 309 Galaxies in 3D across the
Universe in Vienna (see image below) where I gave a highlight
talk and presented a poster. I also visited collaborators in
Ferrara, Oporto and Paris. In Oporto, I gave a talk to the Galaxies
and Observational Cosmology group of the CAUP.
May 23rd-24th, 2014: As part of an effort of the
EMBIGGEN project
to bring astronomy to as much poeple as possible, staff and students
of Universidad de Concepción's Astronomy Department, including
me, participated in an outreach trip to Santa Maria Island. Several
workshops and a public talk at the Escuela Juan José Latorre
for children and their families allowed the people of the island to
learn more about this science and enjoy the night sky through guided
observations with portable telescopes and binoculars brought by
us. It was an incredible experience. We even made the local news!
